PIZZO CALABRO
Pizzo Calabro stands on a ridge of tuff rock which drops straight to the sea. According to the tradition, Pizzo Calabro had erected on the ruins of the colony Focense of Napitia. Saracen attack destroyed it and at the beginning of X century the survivors rebuilt it. In 1363 some Brazilian monks build a monastery, while collectors of corals coming from Amalfi, they erect the church of Grazie that after became Carmelo’s church. Under the Angioini it became an important outpost against Saracen incursions. Divided opinions remain about the origin of the name: for some it derives from Napeo river (Angitola), for other from its position on the border, in dialect “Pizzu”. In 1480, a castle had erected and here in 1815 the former of Naples Gioacchino Murat had shot. The TARTUFO DI PIZZO (Pizzo’s truffle) plays a key role in this place.
