MAIERATO
Maierato is near a tributary of Angilota’s river, the place name originates from a Greek word “Macherato” that means “holy battle”. Probably, the first inhabitants were the citizens of Crissa, a Greek colony founded by Crissei coming from Locri Epizephirii. In 950 Saracens sacked it. It was an hamlet of Rocca Angitola Peerage and from 1303 it belonged to Ruggero of Lauria, then it passed to Sanseverino. In 1505 the Mendoza purchased. In 1783 it was rebuilt after an earthquake.
