GUARDAVALLE
Guardavalle is located on the eastern slope of Serre’s Massif, it is marked by the rivers Assi and Lunari and it is crossed by the torrent Patèlla. It rose about X century when the inhabitants of the coast in order to escape from Saracen raids, they decided to move on a valley. Becoming hamlet of Stilo, it was a municipality in 1811. In the heart of the forest there are the suburbs: Pietracupa and Elce della Vecchia.
PIETRACUPA owes its name to one-eyed granite formation able to hold many people. It rose about 1870 thanks to some families coming from Santo Todaro of Nardodipace, Fabrizia, Campoli, Ragonà and Mongiana. Until the end of 1960s it was possible to reach it walking. It suffered many damages caused by floods. The last flood in 1972 convinced many people to move on Elce della Vecchia.
